Looking for the best honey in India?
In this post, I’m going to share all the important information on how to select the pure and good quality of honey for home use.
So, let’s take a dive into this interesting topic.
Even though there are so many honey brands available in the country, it is said that we Indians consume far less honey than many western countries.
I haven’t really figured out the reason behind it, but I’m hopeful that this picture will change in coming years.
However, as the renowned nutritionist, Pooja Makhija says, you shouldn’t consume lots of honey if you’re looking to lose weight quickly. Basically, honey will just increase your intake of unnecessary calories, which is definitely not a great idea for your weight loss program.
Best Honey Brands in India
Note – The following brand names are not in any particular order.
It is well-known for the good quality of honey in India. The honey processed in its processing units is sourced from the regions of Himalaya, Nilgiri, and Sundarbans.
It has emerged as a reliable brand for many organic grocery products including honey. You may try out its Himalayan Multi-flower flavor for a unique taste.
Little Bee is another well-established brand in India, as it currently exports to 48 countries all around the world.
It offers different flavors of honey such as Acacia Honey, Organic Raw Honey, and Jamun Honey.
Under The Mango Tree
Although it’s not as popular as other brands, I find UTMT as an exciting Indian honey brand. It offers a wide range of honey including Mango Honey, Lychee Honey, Wild Forest Honey, Eucalyptus Honey, etc.
I also like the fact that its honey gets collected from Farmer Co-operatives, which is similar to Amul’s milk collection strategy in India.
You can purchase its products through the official website, online grocery stores as well as traditional brick & mortar stores.
Some other brands & sources:
I’ve also tried other unknown/less known brands on several occasions. And if you’re a honey aficionado like me, you can surely explore the wide range of products from following companies –
- True Elements
- Royal Bee
- Vedic Delight
Local Honey Seller
If you visit your native place or some rural places for holidays in India, you may come across quite a few honey sellers.
Most of them, of course, sell unprocessed multiflora or wild honey at a nominal charge, so try to get the best deal for yourself.
Sometimes, local honey is considered to be the best available in the market, but it may also have common impurities like Sugar, Wax, Bees, and Water.
In case you’re not sure about the quality, you can quickly perform the following water test for your confirmation. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
How to select the Best Honey from Different Brands?
Now, that’s a difficult question!
I’ll divide this answer into three different parts so that you will be able to take the decision on your own.
Color & Consistency –
When you go and buy a bottle of honey from the store, the first thing you notice is its color and consistency from the transparent glass.
Color may not be an ideal way to judge the quality of your honey, but it can tell you a lot of things in few seconds.
For eg., Multiflora Jamun honey should have a dark purple (maybe nearly black) colored Multiflora honey or Mustard honey possesses light color i.e. shades of light yellow to red/orange. Lychee honey will always have a light to deep red color.
Talking about the consistency, it should have a consistent flow and form.
It should never taste sour! If it starts turning sour, you shouldn’t keep it for a long duration.
Please note that some fruit flavored honey may taste different than usual sweet honey. Always check the flavor details on the bottle and then make any assumption about its taste.
If you buy honey from the specialized seller or local vendor, don’t forget to ask them for a taste sample. They will be happy to let you taste their offerings, and you will get to know what you’re really going to enjoy in the end.
Honey Quality Test / Water Test –
This is one of the most recommended tests that you can try after purchasing honey from the grocery store. Its results will let you know whether you’ve selected the right quality of honey or not.
Here’s how to do it –
- Get a transparent glass or jar and fill it with warm water.
- Add a teaspoon of honey in it and stir gently.
- If the honey gets mixed with water, it might contain some artificially added sugar along with other impurities. And if it accumulates at the bottom, you’ve probably chosen the pure honey for yourself.
Done! Now, that’s how you do it!
Note – Some adulterated honey may also pass this test with same results. So, do read their labels carefully for more information on additives and processing ingredients.
These are some of the tried and tested methods to catch any malpractice and wrongdoings of companies. Use these methods and save yourself from unhygienic products.
With the ever growing competition in the Indian market, it has become quite difficult for us to select the best quality of products from stores. Recently, we have seen similar things happening to a trusted instant noodles brand.
So, it’s better to think twice or thrice before buying things that are related to our health.
In this case, Honey can be easily adulterated with low-cost methods. Many companies use such tactics to increase their profits and gain more market share in less time.
I just want you to be aware of these type of products. Do read online reviews and product descriptions before buying honey in India. You should gather as much information as you possibly can.
I hope these tips help you get the best honey from the store next time. If you have any more suggestions or tricks to find quality products, do share with us in the following comment section.
